The Northern Pintail Duck is a slender majestic bird that is very distinctive looking thanks to the tail feathers that are elongated and comprising one-fourth of the drake's body.
The drakes are chocolate brown about the head with a white stripe on each side of the neck that extends up from the belly. The two central tail feathers are generally black while the outside feathers have a white edge around gray. The hens have a dark-brown upper body with a buff or gray head and lower body.
They are often referred to as puddle ducks and they can be found in small, shallow waterholes where they can feed by upending and nibbling seeds and nutlets of the aquatic plants.
The pintail duck makes a logical addition to the overall spread when you are attempting to create the right puddle duck decoy mix. You might try to use them along with mallards, widgeons, teal and gadwall decoys.

How To Set Pintail Decoys
The most common ways in which pintail decoys are used is as part of a larger puddle duck spread. They may be used to attract mallards as part of a diverse looking spread.
They are considered quite important, however, because they add realism and attraction to the spread. The white markings on the pintail drakes stand out starkly against the darker bodies and will help to make the spread more visible.
By placing half a dozen to a dozen pintail drakes throughout the spread they will enhance the spread’s overall drawing power. The more common way to position them, though, is to place them on the outer edge of the spread.
The proportion of a well designed spread might consist of two dozen mallards, six pintail drakes and six black ducks.
Naturally, if you are specifically targeting pintails then you would set your spread up to predominantly consist of pintails – both drakes and hens.
There are many good pieces of information about how different hunters prefer to use their pintail decoys in forums such as this one.
Of the various effective puddle duck decoy spreads that have been suggested by hunters, here is an illustration of one that illustrates an effective strategy. The image is similar to the idea that is expanded upon at swampwreck.com and it shows a pocket that is made upwind in front of the blind.
A few decoys are placed outside of the massed clump as if a few birds have newly arrived.
It is also suggested that this type of spread might work even better if it were given some added movement. This could be as high-tech as jet propulsion to create splashes of water or as simple as a jerk string that is rigged up to two or three decoys.
