Best Full Body Mallard Decoys

The original purpose of full body duck decoys was for hunting in dry fields where you would find ducks feeding.

To set up a realistic looking flock of mallards you will need decoys that are set in a range of positions. Some will be upright on alert while others are head down in a feeding position. The full body style of decoy gives you the option of setting up with a number of different positions such as feeding, resting and sleeping.

Head positions, standing height and ability to move slightly are all areas in which you will need some kind of diversity. As you build up your arsenal of mallard decoys it is worthwhile buying them from a number of different manufacturers to help create that natural diversity you’re aiming to create.

These days the manufacturers of these decoys are making them extremely realistic in their detail and color.

Mallard Decoy Spread Ideas

The use of full body mallard decoys is most common when engaging in dry-field duck hunting. This is a particularly challenging undertaking for a number of reasons. First, there is usually little cover in an open grainfield and second, flights of field-feeding darks are typically large and this means far more eyes to assess the danger.

In order to be successful in dry fields: You’ve got to conceal yourself well, you must call effectively and, finally, your decoy spread has to be set out in a realistic way.

You must do the early hard work first. This means scouting out the dry-field locations and find out which ones are being used, what time the ducks arrive and how frequently. When they leave you will have the opportunity to set up.

One of the important parts of scouting is taking note of the birds at the end of the day to ensure they have left their feeding location undisturbed. If they have encountered no trouble they are likely to return the next morning.

You want to set up in the exact spot where they were feeding the day before.

Different size and shaped decoy spreads tend to work depending on the time in the season. Larger spreads of up to 80 decoys are effective in the early season, but hunting pressure can make the ducks wary later in the season and smaller spreads become more effective.

A good combination that is likely to produce good results is a spread of around five or six dozen decoys with a combination of field shells and full bodies. It has been noticed that drakes show up better than hens in corn stubble so painted up mallard drakes are a good option to use.

Locating the layout blinds in the middle of the spread upwind from the landing zone is an effective way to operate.

The full body decoys can be used in a number of different ways to enhance the spread and to make everything look as natural as possible.

Using them in swampy waters you could perch them in a line along a log. If you can position a suitable log half-submerged in shallow water your decoys can be attached either permanently or on a temporary basis to the log. The types of full body decoys you would be more inclined to use in this situation may be resters and sleepers.

Another tactic that would work nicely with the full body ducks is to intersperse them among floater decoys in shallow water. By sinking PVC piping into the mud and leaving the end protruding above the water you will be able to slide the field stake into the pipe. When the decoy is pointed upwind it should turn slightly with the breeze.

Yet another way to increase the success of your spread is to make sure the pocket is not too small. You’ve got to give the birds a wide enough window to land without having to circle around too many times.

Opening up the pocket will result in fewer fly-bys. Placing a few decoys as far away as 60 yards downwind of the blind location. You want a nice big runway that will have the birds in on their first or second pass.

To increase visibility of the spread and also to contribute to the attempt to make it appear natural is to use goose decoys such as Canada goose full body decoys along with your mallard decoys. The large white snow geese are far easier to see and you can better hide the blind in the spread.

A very effective addition to the mallard spread in fields is the spinning wing decoy. In fact, placing one or two spinning wing decoys in a spread of Canada goose decoys can prove to be very effective.
