The AR-15 provides a reasonably light recoil so although you might be after a bipod that does not weigh too much, you are also going to need to factor in its capability for taking the recoil power. For that reason we have concentrated on the more highly fancied bipods on the market and with their past performance comes a hefty price tag.
It is important to use a bipod that will provide a good level of durability. Buying a cheaper bipod may seem to be an economically wise move at first glance, but over the longer term you're going to find that a higher priced one is going to perform better and will last much longer.
So although some of the prices mentioned below may get your guts squirming a bit, you're going to be better off in the long run with any of the products described here.
The bipods that have been listed below are some of the lightest on the market and we have listed them in order of their weight from lightest to heaviest. Take a look at the comparison list for a quick overview of the range we have examined and then head further down the page for a more in-depth review of each bipod.

Description of Lightweight Bipods for the AR-15 Rifle
Now that we have been able to browse through our list of lightweight bipods suitable for use with the AR15 rifle we will take a look at a more detailed overview of each.
Each of these brief bipod reviews aims to provide you with extra information about the bipod that is not otherwise immediately apparent in the summary list such as special unique features. It should also help you in working out which would prove to offer you the greatest value in terms of its effectiveness.
NeoPod Ultralight Hunting Bipod
- Carbon fiber with PEEK polymer construction
- Quick detach spigot
- 10 leg height adjustments
- Foldable legs
- Cant: +/- 20 degrees
- Pan: +/- 2 degrees
- Height Range: 6.7" - 9.4"
- Weight: 2.9 oz
This is a seriously lightweight bipod that has been constructed using carbon fiber that is reinforced with PEEK polymer. It is said to have the tensile strength of steel but weighs less than half the weight of aluminum.
The NeoPod is the perfect piece of equipment for hunters who are going to be moving around a lot and are trying to minimize the weight they carry.
Mounting the bipod effectively is a big issue and the NeoPod is compatible with a range of adapters that will enable it to be mounted using any sling swivel stud or Picatinny rail. It uses a spigot to give it a great quick detach / deploy mechanism and creates a particularly low center of gravity.
The legs will fold flat under the gun where they can then be quickly deployed when they are needed. It has the ability to cant by 20 degrees to the left or right of center so that it will compensate for uneven ground. It also provides a small amount of pan to track moving targets.

- Rubber and tungsten carbide feet
- Capable of both cant and pan
- Height Range: 6.5" - 9.5"
- Weight: 5.22 oz
The Javelin is another bipod that has been constructed from carbon fiber with additional components made from machined 7075 alloy. This gives it a combination of strength and durability while remaining very lightweight.
The bipod comes with a universal adapter so that it can be mounted on any rifle with minor conversions necessary to the rifle. The bipod attaches to the rifle through the use of rare earth magnets.

Leupold Magnetic Carbon Fiber Bipod
- Carbon fiber legs
- Rare-earth magnetic mount
- Universal adapter plates
- Height Range: 6.5" - 9.5"
- Weight: 5.5 oz
The bipod from Leupold contains a couple of features that help it stand out from the crowd when comparing it to bipod designed to perform a similar role.
First of the legs, which measure 25mm in diameter, can be extended to give it a height range of 6.5 inches to 9.5 inches. But the interesting thing about them is that they are constructed from carbon fiber. This adds significant strength to the legs while keeping weight to an absolute minimum.
The second notable feature to discuss is the mounting system which features a rare earth magnetic mount. Not only does this make it very quick and easy to attach to the rifle but, once it is in place it won’t be moving anywhere.
The benefit for hunters when using this bipod is that it will deploy silently making it a great stealth accessory.

Harris HBRM Bipod
- Aluminum Alloy construction
- Legs notched at 1 inch intervals
- Spring loaded deployment / retraction
- Height Range: 6" - 9"
- Weight: 9.8 oz

To take advantage of the benefit of using the lightest possible bipods with your AR15 there is going to be an up-front cost involved. This is often the case when products featuring carbon fiber components is involved. But the positive can be found in the quality of the materials, the design and construction of the product and its durability. In the long run the pros of using any of the bipods listed above outweighs the perceived negative that is the expense.
All of that being said, many people use and frequently recommend cheaper bipods with their AR-15s. In fact, we have examined a fine selection of bipods recommended for the AR-15.
It is always a good idea to be prepared for the possibility that you will need a bipod adapter to attach your bipod to your rifle. This will be the case if the bipod needs a sling swivel stud that isn't present on your rifle or if a rail mount is needed.
This should not be a major issue because these adapters are readily available for a small cost. Most bipod companies provide a range of adapters that will fit their bipods and are relatively easy to install. Harris Engineering and NeoPod (Steinert Sensing Systems) come quickly to mind here.
