Turkey decoys have been responsible for many successful hunting trips. These, combined with effective turkey calls, lure in all types of turkeys from the most hesitant jakes to the aggressive and wily old toms.

A good call can get the bird close but once they hang up it is the effectiveness of the decoy itself that will bring it all the way in.

Turkey Decoy Setup Tips

The first step to a successful turkey hunt is to get yourself a set of quality decoys and the selection that has been offered above should help you out there.

The second step is to set the decoys up in such a way that they will be irresistible to other turkeys. This is where a few simple turkey decoy tips will be useful.

Safety First

Make sure you set up in a spot where you will have a complete view of any approaching hunters. You don’t want to be behind your decoy if a hunter mistakes it for the real thing and fires on it.

Make Sure Your Turkey Decoy Is Visible

The first tip sound pretty obvious but you’ve got to set your decoy up where it will be seen by other birds. This means placing it out in the open and on a high piece of ground.

Use A Tom To Catch A Tom

Nothing is going to challenge a longbeard like the presence of a strutting tom. A tom turkey in full strut with a couple of hens in the vicinity is going to prompt a challenge from a dominant gobbler.

Use More Than One Turkey Decoy

Following on from the previous tip, adding multiple turkeys to the site is going to increase your strike rate. A strutting tom turkey with a couple of hen decoys is the perfect set up for a showdown.

It looks more natural for a group of three turkeys to be present and the increased numbers will give more confidence to an incoming turkey.

One Jake At A Time

Only set out a single jake decoy at a time. More than one jake will cause even the most dominant tom to become wary and stay away.

Turkey Decoy Spread Ideas

Coming up with a successful turkey spread can be a matter of trial and error and something that works one day may not work later in the season.

The Outdoor Life has provided a simple overview of three set ups that have proven successful over a significant period of time.

Placement of Turkey Decoys

The placement of your decoys is a factor that is going to be crucial to your success.

You should position your decoys no further than 25 yards from your hiding spot. As explained on the Big Game Logic site, this distance should be adjusted depending on the shooting ability of the hunter.

Are You Legal?

Make sure you check the regulations for the use of turkey decoys in your area. You should also go further and make sure you know of any variation to the rules for their use on public and private land.

More Resources to Check Out

The prospect of attracting more ducks and geese to your spread is an enticing one and the use of motion decoys can be the primary cause of this. However there are many hunters who are enjoying all sorts of success using other types of decoys.

The key is to try to create a diverse spread that is filled with all different types of waterfowl that are feeding and resting comfortably.
