Use Coot Decoys To Add Confidence to the Spread

One of the less frequently used species of duck decoys is the coot decoy. This is a bit of a surprise because they are a plentiful bird and tend to show up in a high proportion of feeding spots.

These are the types that are perfect as confidence decoys to fill out the spread and enhance it. They often mix with puddle ducks and look perfectly normal

The value of putting together a small rig of coot decoys cannot be underestimated. Just a set of a dozen coot decoys placed together in a feeding group with a jerk string attached can give the appearance of an excited group of birds that are enjoying a part of the water that is rich in food. Other ducks won't be able to stop themselves from joining in.

Using Coot Decoys

It is not uncommon to see coot decoys used in large decoy spreads in open water. The aim is to create a nice big highly visible spread that contains a number of different contrasting colors.

Starting off with a cluster of larger oversized decoys is the first part of the process. This is particularly effective with 6 to 9 Canada goose floaters, 12 or more super-magnum mallards and half a dozen black ducks plus pintails. Into this mix will go a set of 24 coot decoys.

The set up would position the mallards and black ducks on either side of the blind and the Canada geese off to the side of the mallards. The coots would be positioned down the middle in a long downwind line.

This is just one of the ways that coot decoys may be deployed to take advantage of the confidence they instill in other birds.

There are a number of different puddle duck decoy species to try that will not only provide a natural looking spread but will also add diversity. It will give the ducks something different to look for which could be important for fooling the older, more wary birds.
