3 Pin Bow Sight Yardage

The 3-pin bow sight is a popular choice for bow hunters who are aware that they will meet success over shorter distances.

This may be because the terrain features a lot of timber or undergrowth that will hamper the possibility of a longer shot.

The most popular set up is to have the pin yardages set to 20, 30 and 40 yards or some similarly gapped grouping.

Another commonly quoted set of 3 pin bow sight distances used by hunters is to gap the first two pins closely together and the last at a longer distance.

This might give you a 3 pin sight yardage of 10 yards, 15 yards and 30 yards or perhaps 15 yards, 20 yards and 40 yards.

Most hunters will confirm that the 40 yard distance is rarely, if ever, used.

3 Pin vs 5 Pin Sights

There are pros and cons when deciding how many pins you will need on your sight. There are sometimes mitigating factors that determines the number of pins too.

3-Pin vs 5-Pin Sight

One school of thought is the more pins you have, the more flexibility it will give you in terms of distance.

The other school of thought (and this generally comes from the very experienced hunters) is that you will only be taking shots from known short distances and you will rarely use more than the first or second pin.

A 5 pin sight will provide you with the option of shooting out to a longer range. The extra 2 pins can potentially provide you with a further 20 yards.

The downside to using a sight with more pins is the increased amount of clutter in the sight window. The more pins potentially means your target will be obscured by pins you may never use.

A 3 pin bow sight gives you enough space between the pins to properly shoot the gap, something that becomes harder as the number of pins in the window increases.

Another reason why some people prefer the 3 pin set up to the 5 pin is it reduces the chance of choosing the wrong pin to shoot. In the heat of the moment it is very possible the pins become muddled in the hunter’s eye, particularly if there are a lot to choose from.

Best of Both Worlds

A suggestion that has some merit, if  you’re undecided between a 3 pin or a 5 pin sight is to buy a 5 pin sight and remove a couple of pins. Then, if you ever have the need for the longer range capabilities, you can add the extra pins.

Why You Might Consider a 3 Pin Sight With A Floater Pin

IQ Pro Hunter - A 3 Pin sight with a floater pin

To get the combined benefit of a fixed pin and an adjustable pin, you could use a bow sight that has 2 fixed pin and the 3rd is a floater.

This means that the 3rd pin can be quickly adjusted independently from the others in times when you need to take a longer range shot.

An example of a high quality bow sight that uses a floater pin is the IQ Pro Hunter Bow Sight.

As well as providing the ability to include adjustability into a fixed pin set-up the bow also features the significant feature of Retina Lock technology.

So…What Is the Best 3-Pin Bow Sight?

There are a lot of bow sights listed on this page so the obvious question is going to be, which one is the best?

The answer totally depends on what you consider to be the most important factor in a good bow sight.

If price is a huge consideration you are going to have to rule out the most expensive sights and only consider those that fall under the low cost end of the spectrum.

If adjustability is paramount, you will only consider the sights that offer 2nd and 3rd axis adjustment.

Similarly, if you do the majority of your hunting in low light situations you will need the greatest level of illumination possible and choose your sight accordingly.

Fortunately, all of the sights that have been listed above have been clearly described with all of their features highlighted to give you the best possible chance of meeting the factors that will determine the best bow sight for your hunting needs.
