Sometimes the red dot scope can be too close to the eye and it dominates the field of vision or you need to be able to fit another piece of equipment such as a red dot magnifier on your rifle. You won’t be able to do it with a standard scope mount. That’s when you might need to consider a cantilever scope mount.
There are a few reasons why you might want to use a cantilever scope mount. They are particularly useful when mounting red dot sights such as those that are made by Aimpoint or Eotech.
Positioning the scope further forward which will give you more room behind in case you wanted to put something like a magnifier behind it. Secondly, it also changes the center of balance of the rifle which could significantly improve your accuracy. And, as mentioned above, by moving the scope further forward you are also increasing your field of view because the scope is going to appear slightly smaller at the longer distance.
Now the question is, what are the different choices of cantilever scope mounts that are available for sale?
Featured below is a comparison list that includes the level of offset you will get plus the weight it will add and these that should provide you with a quick and easy idea of the various makes and models that are available, what they look like and the different options they provide. The MSRP is a guide price that the manufacturers place on their products and it is not uncommon to find them for far cheaper.

LaRue Tactical SPR QD Scope Mount LT104
The LT104 mount features vertical split rings and has been precision machined from bar-stock aluminum that has been anodized. It is made to last for a long time with tight tolerances and a rugged exterior that is particularly resilient.
This is a rock solid scope mount that has been specifically designed for the AR platform and the quick detach locks it down with no side to side movement that returns to zero when removed and replaced.
It must be noted that the LT104 will not work with any folding rear sight that is over 0.5” tall when folded.
Vortex 2-Inch Offset Cantilever Scope Mount
This is a rock solid scope mount that is designed for the AR-15 style rifles. It is to be used for mounting 30mm telescopic sights and when the screws have been correctly torqued it will remain tight and unmoving through multiple rounds.
The offset nature of the mount means that it is pushed forward a couple of inches to provide the correct eye relief when shooting. The recommended torque specs for the scope are as follows: base screws 20 in/lbs, ring screws 16 in/lbs.
It can be mounted on any Picatinny or Weaver rail and is very simple to install.
Aero Precision 30mm Ultralight Extended Scope Mount
The Aero Precision scope mount is an extremely lightweight mount that is made from 6061-T6 extruded aluminum and has been manufactured to an exacting standard. It features the rear ring that is pushed forward by 1 inch to offer better eye relief. The mount is designed to work well with a wide range of high-end platforms.
Note carefully that this particular scope mount will fit 30mm diameter scope sizes. A 1-inch model is also available.
The mount is designed to fit AR type upper receivers with Mil-Spec 1913 Picatinny rails. The design also incorporates a cross-slot keyway that will help to absorb recoil. It locks solidly and will give you a repeatable return to zero. For the price it is an amazingly solid and reliable mount.
NcStar AR15 QR Weaver Cantilever Scope Mount
There are a number of very good cantilever scope mounts made specifically for the AR-15 platform and this is a low-priced one that has received mixed reviews. It is a one piece scope mount that is made from aircraft grade anodized aluminum and solid steel. Those who have had a good experience with it have given it an unequivocal thumbs up, but there have also been some negative reviews that we cover further below.
It is more versatile than first appearances might lead you to believe with the capability of being able to mount virtually any scope or red dot sight. It uses the NcStar QR Lever to make the mounting process particularly easy. This quick release lever has been proven to lock down the mount solidly.
The mount is designed to work with both 30 mm and 1 inch diameter scopes. It comes with spacers that will enable it to be used with 1 inch scopes and you simply remove them for the larger scope 30 mm diameter.
Rock River Arms Hi-Rise Cantilever Scope Mount
This is a lower priced solidly built scope mount that has been cantilevered with a couple of options that will fit either 1 inch or 30mm scope diameters. It features a large knurled knob that makes removal and re-installation a very simple process.
It is quite a heavy scope mount, weighing in at 10 ounces. There are 8 screws used to clamp the rings together to ensure a tight fit. The rings themself are set widely apart for an even distribution that will reduce the potential for movement.
The mount will fit a Picatinny rail set up. All in all, this is a very reliable cantilevered scope mount that offers outstanding value for money and certainly punches above its weight.
Warne R.A.M.P. 30mm Tactical Scope Mount
This is the Warne Rapid Acquisition Multi-Sight Platform and is a cantilever scope mount that is designed for the AR-15 rifle. This mounting system positions the front ring forward to allow for the shooter to have the proper head orientation when shooting.
The mount is made from quality components primarily CNC machined aluminum with #8 Torx style fasteners with steel threaded inserts. This is a particularly well made product, is well designed and will prove to be highly reliable.
It is available in three sizes to fit scopes with either 1 inch, 30 mm or 34 mm diameters. In each case the rings are set high so that it is at the ideal height for an AR platform.

Cantilever Scope Mount Advantages
It gives you more rail space by pushing the optic forward allowing for other accessories such as a magnifier to fit in behind
It changes the center of balance of the weapon which can greatly steady it and improve accuracy
It increases the field of view of your optic because the lens takes up a smaller amount of space as it is moved further from the eye and increases your peripheral view
What About An AR Cantilever Mount?
There are a number of AR 15 scope mounts that mount at an offset to cater for scopes with large objective lenses so that proper clearance can be attained. While each person’s preferences and set up will be different, if you are using a scope with a large objective lens on your AR 15 you will want to be able to offset it by using a cantilever scope mount.
Scopes for AR 15 rifles are made with a diameter of either 30mm or 1 inch and so the best scope mounts will be capable of housing either a 30mm or a one inch tube. As can be seen from the selection provided above, the high quality cantilever scope mounts are one piece units with the rings and the mount incorporated into a single solid piece and products such as the Aero Precision scope mount offer great lightweight solutions.
The one piece cantilever mount is arguably easier to position because you merely get the entire unit positioned without having to worry about customizing the individual placement of each ring. They can be attached to the Picatinny rail on the upper receiver.
Look For Value For Money Mounts
It is evident from the selections that have been presented above that the quality of construction and materials used is quite high, even if the prices vary. It is clear, though, that you get what you pay for when it comes to quality of construction and the higher priced mounts probably hold an edge. You pay more up front so that you don't pay later.
We have also taken a look at the wider selection of one piece scope mounts that are available and it would be worth your while to take a look at these if you are trying to gauge whether these will suit your shooting needs.
