Details of Puffy Pants for Hunting

Now that we have had the benefit of viewing a selection of puffy pants well suited for hunting, along with basic details displayed side by side, possibly helpful features can be easily identified along with the recommended price of each.

Below is a more detailed description of each product with a short review of each that describes the features of each.

Sitka Gear Kelvin Lite Down 3/4 Pant

Perfect for winter hunting, Sitka Gear’s Kelvin Lite collection is genuinely magnificent. The 3/4 Pant is an insulating powerhouse, ideal for withstanding the ferocity of horrendously cold mid-season hunts.

With a wide range of motion, great packability and layering ability, these incredibly versatile pants are simply more than warm pants.

The interior and exterior of the pants are built with quality materials and excellent craftmanship. The two-way stretch nylon face provides good water resistance and aids your mobility.

The pants are designed with a standard fit and 3/4 length (fit slightly below knee pads) which allows them to easily accommodate multiple layers of clothing and be worn as outer or mid layers. This layering ability demonstrates their versatility, that is, the pants remain comfortable early season through to late hunting season with proper layering.

The pants are constructed with a significant level of warmth relative to weight. This is achieved through the implementation of compressible, lightweight 900 fill Primaloft Gold insulation in the design.

The seat of the pants is also paneled with insulation for greater moisture resistance and warmth in the rear.

Some other features of the pants are the 7/8 side zippers and a nylon web belt. The side zippers help slip the pants on and off without removing your boots. The belt is to allow for a better fit.

The 3/4 length of the pant makes packing the pants much easier than a full-length puffy pant.

7/8th length side zippers allow for easy on/off without removing your boots. The ¾ length of the pant was designed to fit just below your knee pads and above your boot to reduce bulk in your pack. A built-in nylon belt allows for a customized fit every time.

First Lite Uncompahgre Puffy Pant

First Lite’s Uncompahgre Puffy Pants provide hunters with a considerable level of packable insulation, perfect for ensuring late season glassing sessions, camp sitting and/or tree sitting remain enjoyable.

Though the pants are built with synthetic insulation instead of natural (down) insulation, the pants are simply remarkable in relation to their weight, warmth, and compressibility. First Lite takes immense delight in designing a great puffy pant from synthetic insulation.

The pants are constructed with 100 grams per square meter of exclusive 37.5 Active Particle Technology for insulation. This breathable technology effectively drains moisture and allows wearers to maintain core body temperature while also trapping your odors and releasing them when laundered.

The exterior of the pants is treated with Durable Water Repellent to repel moisture (snow and rain) and block wind. For further moisture and tear resistance, the seat is reinforced. It is important to note that the pants remain warm, whether dry or wet.

For optimized range of motion, the pants have an ergonomic fit and have a true to fit size. Note that all zippers, pockets, closures, and adjustments remain quiet while moving. Additionally, these pants are machine washable.

The pants include full side zippers and Velcro waist adjustability which helps you get the pants on and off quickly without removal of boots.

GooseFeet Gear Down Pants

GooseFeet Gear does not follow the “one size fits all” approach to selling pants. Instead, their down pants are highly customizable, allowing customers to devise incredibly unique designs which can accommodate their needs and wants.

Customers can specify precise body measurements, color, fabric (Denier), fill weight, in addition to side zipper length, and whether you want your pants baffled.

Every down pant is insulated with warm and lightweight premium 850-fill goose down, ranging from 2.5 ounces to 8.5 ounces. With such a wide range of fill weight, obtaining your preferred warmth to weight ratio should be possible.

Depending on the fill weight, the pants can withstand temperatures ranging from 40F to -20F.

The down pants are also greater in wet conditions because they are treated with a Durable Water Repellent finish, which effectively dispels light moisture and snow.

The outer fabric of the down pants are crafted with a nylon fabric. All customers have the choice of either 8 Denier nylon or 20 Denier nylon. The 8D fabric is soft and great for minimizing weight (both liner and shell fabric). 20D fabric is the most durable fabric offered by GooseFeet Gear. The outside surface for both 8D and 20D is treated with Durable Water Repellent.

Other features include elastic ankle cuffs for greater draft protection, and a cinch top waist (with shock cord and cord lock) which allows you to tighten/loosen the pants when necessary.

Generally, the pants are shipped within 4 weeks of the order date.

Ultimately, the ability to customize down pants make these ideal for those with unique sizing requirements.

KUIU Super Down Ultra Down Pants

KUIU Super Down Ultra Pants are particularly light and are primarily intended as a mid-layer when you are expecting to remain exceptionally still in cold/wet weather. They also perform effectively as outer layers on moderately cool hunts when brush busting is not expected/required.

The design has a large focus on compactness. The very light weight and ability to be compressed inside their internal pouch make these pants incredibly convenient options to bring on mid-season hunts.

The lining and face are designed with comfortable, and wind-proof 12 Denier nylon Stunner Stretch fabric. This nylon fabric is treated with Durable Water Repellent for greater moisture resistance.

The seat and knees of the pants are reinforced with 30 Denier paneling. These high wear areas require higher Denier for greater toughness and ability to withstand abrasions.

The pants are insulated with 1.7 ounces of water-resistant Quixdown that has 850+ fill power. This insulation is 95% down cluster and 5% feathers. The insulation is also finished with Durable Water Repellent, ensuring each individual cluster is resistant to water and remains warm when wet.

Other features are full length side zippers to easily apply/remove the pants, and hook-and-loop adjustable waist tabs for customizing your fit.

Western Mountaineering Flight Pants

Western Mountaineering Flight Pants are truly phenomenal winter weather protecting pants and should entirely appease wearers of the pants in terms of warmth and comfort.

The body of the pants are crafted with 20 Denier Polyester Ripstop. The seat and knees are reinforced with Gore Windstopper for additional moisture resistance and abrasion protection.

The remaining sections of the pants are built with an outer shell of microfiber fabric which is coated with Durable Water Repellent for even greater water-resistance. The design only sparingly uses Gore Windstopper material considering it provides minimal breathability and is relatively heavy.

For insulation, the pants are stuffed with 850+ fill power goose down weighing 4 ounces. Not only does this provide exceptional heating but it is also very compressible, thus they are easily packable.

The pants can be adjusted with minimal effort thanks to the adjustable waist belt and elastic ankle cuffs with adjustable Velcro closures (which has draft protection).

Other features of the pants are Gore Windstopper storm tabs which protect zipper sliders. The full-length side zips allow for easy on/off of the pants.

Kifaru International Lost Park Pants

The Kifaru International Lost Park Pants are constructed to ensure that you remain comfortable and healthy in the harshest, most extreme conditions.

The pants are designed to be incredibly durable and water-repellent while also remaining lightweight and breathable.

The pant interior and exterior are crafted with Rhino Ripstop Shield which provides great water-resistance. Additionally, the rear and knees/shins of the pants are reinforced with double paneled 500 Denier Cordura for superior wear protection.

The pants are insulated with Climashield Apex (synthetic insulation) and is treated with a Durable Water Repellent finish to prevent the pants from absorbing moisture.

To create a consistent layer of warmth and prevent cold spots caused by insulation clumping, the insulation is sewn into a tough inner lining. Though the pants use synthetic insulation, they have excellent packability.

These pants feature full length side zippers for easily removing and donning the pants. There are also adjustable cuffs and an adjustable belt to modify your fit.

Stone Glacier Grumman Down Pants

Stone Glacier’s Grumman Down Pants are exceptionally satisfying to wear on hunts. For many hunters, it only takes one long glassing session on top of a mountain to convince hunters to pack the pants for every hunt.

The pants are tactically designed to limit weight and maximize packability, in addition to ensuring hunters remain warm and comfortable in adverse conditions.

These pants are constructed with a 15 Denier Pertex Quantum Shell textile which is quiet and windproof. The high wear areas of the pants such as the knees and seat are reinforced with additional shell textiles for greater durability in these zones.

The pants are insulated with 850+ fill power HyperDry (goose) down weighing 4.2 ounces, which is treated with Durable Water Repellent. Unsurprisingly, this design provides a remarkable warmth to weight ratio.

For easy on/off, the pants feature full-length side zippers which also helps in temperature regulation.

For enhanced comfort, the pants are designed with a slim waistline which allows for simple layering under your pack and waistbelt.

Use these once for a long glassing session on top of the mountain, and you’ll never again leave home without them.

What to Look for When Buying Puffy Pants

There are many factors considered essential (or at least very important) when purchasing puffy pants.

Particularly warm pants will be quite costly; thus, you should strongly consider your options and determine which factors are personally most critical to/for your hunts.

Down (which is sourced from geese, ducks, and other waterfowl) is more compressible than synthetic insulation. The superior compressibility allows down insulated pants to be packed more easily. For this reason, down puffy pants are often favorable for hunters.

Synthetic insulation (which is created with polyester fibers and patterned to replicate loft clusters of down) generally cannot retain its shape. This is because once compressed, the material becomes slightly larger.

High Warmth to Weight Ratio

Warmth to Weight Ratio relates to the fill power of down insulation. Fundamentally, the higher the fill power in a down pant, the warmer it will be for its weight.

Down is the greatest insulator relative to its weight and generally has a warmth to weight ratio three times greater than synthetic insulation.

Note that fill power is an indicator of the quality of down. The higher the fill power, the more volume a given weight of down will fill or occupy.

Synthetic insulation is generally expressed as grams per square meter. The greater the grams of insulation, the thicker and warmer the pants will be. With multiple layers, pants with 100g of insulation will provide ample warmth for extremely cold conditions.

Over time, synthetic insulation will become less effective at trapping heat, while with good care, down can remain effective for decades.

Water Resistance

Though down feathers offer tremendous warmth, it is more expensive than synthetic insulation and is vulnerable to moisture, meaning down easily absorbs water and provides little water resistance, thus increasing the weight of the insulation.

Synthetic insulation will typically outperform down in wetter, more humid conditions and will dry faster too.

For greater water resistance, down will generally be treated with a water-resistant coating at a molecular level. However, even with treatment, synthetic insulation resists moisture much better.

Therefore, if you are expected to be wearing the pants in damper conditions, you may be more inclined to wear synthetic insulated pants such as First Lite’s Uncompahgre Pants or Kifaru’s Lost Park Pants.

If you're looking for more warm hunting pants needed for cold conditions you may want to look at our list of Fleece Lined Hunting Pants or Hunting Pants to Wear in Treestands

A Final Word

These pants are some of the best insulated pants for withstanding cold, wet conditions, and are particularly favorable when you are not expecting to be moving much.

The pants selected in this list provide excellent heat trapping ability and will ensure you remain warm on mid and late season hunts.

Down insulated puffy pants are well liked by hunters because they are highly compressible and lightweight. Insulated puffy pants are preferred in conditions in which hunters are expecting to get wet.

If you expect to endure long sessions of glassing or sitting/standing around in the insufferable cold, any of the puffy pants selected above will ensure you remain comfortable on your hunts.
