Synthetic Insulation vs Down

Down is natural insulation, which is generally sourced from ducks or geese, while synthetic insulation is an attempt to replicate natural down abilities with artificial materials.

Synthetic insulation is created with polyester fibers and patterned in a way which replicates the loft clusters of down.

Down provides a better warmth to weight ratio than synthetic insulation which relates to the heavier weight of the synthetic fibers.

Down is also more compressible than synthetic insulation which allows it to be packed more easily. Additionally, synthetic insulation generally cannot retain its shape because it becomes slightly larger once compressed.

Over time, synthetic insulation will lose its ability to trap heat, while with good care, down can last decades.

Synthetic insulation is typically cheaper than down though. Synthetic is also naturally more resistant to water than down insulation (even when down is treated with durable water repellent) and continues to provide warmth when wet.

Therefore, if you seek insulated clothing which is light compressible, your best bet is to wear gear with down insulation. For harsher, wetter days, synthetic insulated clothing is likely your best option.

A Final Word

Some hunting pants are specifically designed for walking and remaining durable/puncture resistant while others are great for staying warm while stationary.

These pants can be classified as the best down insulated pants for less mobility in cold, wet conditions. Notice that this is not a look at the best overall insulated hunting pants but simply down insulated hunting pants.

The down insulation used in these pants are excellent at trapping heat and ensuring you remain warm.

The major benefits of wearing down pants instead of synthetic pants are the compression ability and lightweight nature of them.

If you expect to endure long sessions of sitting and standing around in the intolerable cold (and possibly wind and rain) any of these pants will be ones to wear to make the conditions bearable.
