A standard bow hunting bow sight mount is quite compact and usually positions the sight window in line with the bow’s riser.

This works for a large proportion of people and many bow hunters never have a problem in using them.

There are circumstances, however, when it is preferable for the sight to be positioned further from the eye and the way in which this is done is by using a sight with a dovetail bar mount.

Dovetail bars may be 4” or 6” in length and enable to sight to be positioned further forward in front of the bow riser.

Hunters find it can enable a greater degree of accuracy with the pin allowing for a finer point on the target. This is why you will find that target bow sights are almost exclusively made with dovetail extension bar mounts.

It should be noted that there are some down sides in using them for certain shooters depending on your experience and shooting capability.

We will take a bit of a look at a selection of hunting bow sights that are built with dovetail mounts and give you the opportunity to compare them.

The following list of bow sights with a dovetail mount gives you a quick overview of what is available on the market today for comparison purposes. Further down the page we have provided a more detailed review of each sight.

Advantages Of A Dovetail Bow Sight

Adjustability – able to move the sight forward and backward to suit your set up. You can also get the sight closer in to the riser giving you the ability to aim more precisely by perfectly matching up the sight housing with the peep.

Quick removal – the dovetail mount provides you with the ability to quickly mount and detach the sight from the bow

Fine Tune Aiming - When you move the sight further out you are effectively making the aiming process a more exact one…but only if you are already accomplished at holding your bow steady.

When the pin is further away a small movement will result in the pin moving more in your sight window.

If you have not yet become extremely adept at holding the bow steady at full draw it would be a better idea to stick with a standard hunting mount.

Can Help Poor Vision – some people, as they get older, find that the pins are not as sharp as they once were with a standard sight mount.

By being able to move the sight further out it is possible to bring the pins back into sharper focus again.

Of course, there may be other reasons why you are finding it difficult to focus on the pins and it is worthwhile looking at other possible bow sight fixes for people with poor vision.

There is some spirited discussion going on over whether to use a dovetail mount or a direct mount when hunting.

Some people are of the firm belief that a direct mount is the only way to go when hunting. Some say it's because they are more compatible with a quiver mount while others merely say it's because that's how their hunting sight arrived.

Those who have made the switch to a dovetail mount have found the versatility they provide is a huge advantage, particularly when aligning the peep.

For most people it will ultimately come down to trying a dovetail mounted sight and making your decision according to your results.
